“WE ARE ALSO HERE!” FROM YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

 

With the theme of Contribution of the Youth with Disabilities to the Democratic Life, Konaklı Municipality is realizing the first European Union Project with the support of Turkish National Agency. Within the project partnership by Lithuania and Slovakia, Konaklı will host 7 partner institutions and 30 young participants from 3 countries.

 

Konaklı Municipality is realizing the European Union project titled “We Are Also Here!” with the support of State Planning Organization Turkish National Agency. The project targeting the participation of young people with disabilities in the democratic proceedings and the provision of a means to let themselves heard by the decision makers is administered under the coordination of Konaklı Municipality. A total of 7 partner institutions and associations are providing contributions to the project, including the Youth Assembly of Alanya City Council from Turkey, and local municipalities and non-governmental institutions from Lithuanian and Slovakia. One of the Lithuanian partners, the Silute Municipality, is also one of the sister municipalities of Konaklı Municipality.

 

Having the preparatory meeting of which was held in Lithuania on March 4-5, the first step of the project will be the determination of the outstanding problems the disabled people have to confront in their respective countries, by conducting a survey among 100 youth from each country. The survey already proceeding in the Rehabilitation Centers and Special Education Schools at Alanya is simultaneously conducted also in Lithuania and Slovakia. The questionnaire available online in the project web site contains all the questions in the languages of all the participating countries. All young people with disabilities between the ages of 18-30 who wish to participate in the survey can do so at www.bizdeburadayiz.org address.

 

In addition to the workshops to be run during the main activity meeting of the project, music training will be offered to the young people during the duration of the project, using new technologies and with the help of experts on the subject. Planning to use art as an important tool for the youth with disabilities to express themselves, the musical activities performed during the project will be recorded as a video clip and will be broadcasted in local and national musical channels. Furthermore, the reports prepared during the workshops will be published as a bulletin, and will be sent to all concerned institutions. For eight full days, Konaklı will host 7 partner institutions and 30 young participants from 3 countries.

The evaluation meeting planned to be held at Slovakia, the project is aiming to let the youth with disabilities to make themselves heard by the administrative mechanisms by tackling the problems of those disabled in European scale. At the same time, the youth with disabilities will receive information, discuss about, and have an opportunity to bring proposals about the policies concerning themselves in the workshops. With local municipalities and non-governmental organizations working together, this will enable the creation of an important bridge between the decision makers and implementers.
